-- contest poster by NAL

Well, there's going to be a little change from the usual this time around; this particular contest is being hosted and sponsored by NAL! With that, let's get down to the nitty-gritty details, shall we?

Oh, and just to let y'all know in case you hadn't noticed, this contest has now been upgraded to official status. Whoo!

Running Date:

Here at Game Jolt we love you so much, this competition starts right now and will end on Valentine's Day 2011 - February 14th at 12:00 PM EST
(view the end time in your timezone)

The Theme:

The theme is Invention!

You can interpret "invention" in any way you want (i.e. not everything has to be about inventing the light bulb), so be creative with your usage of this theme!

The Prize:

Would just like to mention briefly that the following game-specific prizes are some of NAL's favourite games; he wants to spread the indie love and support the developers in the process.
The t-shirt is courtesy of CROS.

The following information regarding prizes is all in NAL's words, because he did such a good job of wording it all, I don't want to butcher it!

1st Place:
Front-page feature on Game Jolt, plus:
Your choice of one of the shirts in this collection, plus:
Your choice of TWO of the following prizes, all of which are similar in monetary value:
VVVVVV + Psychonauts
or Bully: Scholarship Edition
or Super Meat Boy
or Minecraft Alpha code
or £8 (~US$12.50) of games of your choice on Steam
or £7 (~US$11.50) PayPal
*can be duplicated for both prizes for a total of £14 (~US$23) over PayPal or £16 (~US$30) on Steam

2nd Place:
Front-page feature on Game Jolt, plus:
Your choice of ONE of the following prizes, all of which are similar in monetary value:
VVVVVV + Psychonauts
or Bully: Scholarship Edition
or Super Meat Boy
or Minecraft Alpha code
or £8 of games of your choice on Steam
or £7 PayPal

3rd Place:
Front-page feature on Game Jolt, plus:
Your choice of ONE of the following prizes, all of which are similar in monetary value:
VVVVVV + Psychonauts
or Bully: Scholarship Edition
or £8 of games of your choice on Steam
or £7 PayPal

I'll also independently pick a couple of other games separate from the top three, not necessary "4th and 5th place", which I feel have had a lot of effort put into them and whose creators deserve a little merit, and offer their creators either VVVVVV or Psychonauts from Steam. :)

All prizes except for PayPal and Minecraft Alpha awarded via Steam.

Just a couple other things I feel should be added -

Minecraft Alpha codes are gift codes purchased prior to 20th December 2010. These are eligible by Notch for free updates to the game for its lifetime (unlike any codes purchased 20th or later). I figured they'd come in handy for something like a competition prize!

All Steam prizes will require you to own Steam and either be my friend (username: nalgames), which also requires you to have bought at least one other Steam game, or you to let me know the email address you signed up to Steam with.

PayPal prizes will be sent in GBP. You can convert this to your currency within PayPal or accept it in £ as a separate balance. There may be a very small fee for the transfer; I'll take care of this.

Choosing "[x] of games of your choice" allows you to pick any game or combination of games up to the total of money. I don't mind going a few pence over that money, though I can't refund any unspent money in any other way.

And lastly, if you don't know what to get, get Psychonauts.

All contestants will also receive a "Whoop-diddly-doo-da Time" -- courtesy of Game Jolt and NAL.

The Rules:

  • Your entry must be an original game created just for this contest.

  • Your entry must relate to the chosen theme.

  • Your entry must be playable on Windows.

  • Collaborations are fine. Go for it with someone else! We like team work!

  • Only one game submission per person/team.

  • There are no restrictions on creation tools, libraries, file sizes or anything like that. We like diversity. Make it in Flash, make it in Construct, code it up from scratch yourself, we don't care.

  • Pre-existing code bits are acceptable, but for this contest, we'd prefer you not to use premade game engines. Code bits must have been made by you originally.

  • No mandatory fullscreen or resolution changing. Can include a fullscreen/window switching option in-game.

  • You're encouraged to place the contest poster in your game, although it's definitely not a requirement.

Trophies:

For those of you that are in the achievements closed beta, please feel free to add trophies to your contest entries, but be aware that doing so will not affect the judging process, because not everyone is able to enjoy acquiring trophies at this time.

How to Enter:

To enter your game into the contest, you must upload the game to the main site. After doing that, reply to this forum post with the URL to your game.

Judges:

These are the people that will be judging the contest. Feel free to bribe them.

  • Jimmy

  • Ashley Gwinnell

  • KniteBlargh

  • UnknownGamer

  • NAL (Maybe)

In Closing:

We'd love some help in spreading the news. If you frequent any forums, or know of/own any blogs, it'd be great if you posted news about the contest. This site will only get bigger with support from YOU. If you've posted it in your blog or in a forum, or know of any site that has, you may post the URL to the site in this thread:

"we'd prefer you not to use premade engine"

could you clear it a bit? Premade engine = game engine or graphic one?

Polan ~ Game engines. I'll edit that in.

polan ~ an engine would do the physics stuff. Something like Box 2D wouldn't be allowed, whereas Slick 2D would. That's the best example I can think of. It's probably a good idea to see if NAL replies...

It's just in there to prevent people taking something they've already made, adding one level and colourising two sprites a bit differently and entering with that. As long as you don't go overboard, and don't use something like 2dcube's planet engine gmk, you'll be fine.

Can I invent a game?

I probably won't be able to participate much this time around, with school and FRC, but does this mean that entries can't use GM OGRE or engines built by the entrant?

Maybe I should make a game where Above the Sky travels back in time to invent the human race.

@Lebowski Child I think that's a little too loose an interpretation :P You could invent new styles of gameplay or similar?

@Link3000 I'd put GMOgre or any equivalents as being just about fine, as long as you do enough of the game yourself.

If we get $8 worth on steam why only 5 through paypal?

It's not 8 dollars, it's 8 euros.

Because it's more trouble going through PayPal than Steam. :3

Oh no, tater's entering. D:

@Shelby @roboguy It's pounds, not euros/dollars :P It's £8 Steam or £5 PayPal purely because I like Steam and want to have an incentive for people to steer towards that.

I like Steam.
