An immersive and realistically difficult hacking game. Made in 24 hours for a charity gamejam.

Hacking games being alien territory for me, this represented an opportunity to experiment with a genre totally outside of my comfort-zone.

Hey,

Is it possible to change the default font of the game ? This is really awful to read for me (windowed, high resolution screen).

Also, two questions :
- Why would you not leave the content of the current directory visible ? complexe name directories to type are a pain to remember.
- Is it possible to / Why can't i get the last command I typed ?

I very curious to see how far the game goes. Nice job.

Hi there, thanks for checking out the game!

You can change the font by going to the "game" folder inside the game files, and replacing "Dosis-Medium.ttf", but be sure that whatever you replace it with has the same file name. It's not ideal, and I can't accept responsibility for any visual horribleness that occurs as a result, since the game was optimized for the current font, but if you must change it, then that's the way to do it.

As for the two questions, this is basically because the game was actually made two whole years ago for a game jam, and sixteen-year-old me knew relatively little about game development. I tried to correct for the game's original ugliness insofar as I could (new fonts, altered colour scheme, new graphics), but some gameplay limitations (such as those you described) would be very difficult to fix or improve upon without recreating large sections of the original game. I guess the best I can recommend is that you keep a pen and paper in hand, or just ignore folders and files with really long convoluted names, since they aren't important in any of the puzzles.

Again, thanks for checking the game out. I hope you can still get some fun out of it despite the issues you raised. :)

I completely understand that you can't modify the game, especially game jam games, haha. I was just hopping I missed some shortcuts ;)

The windows version of the game have a lot of different binary packages but I couldn't locate the font file (if it exist in that verison of the build :)). I guess i'll just play fullscreen then.

It should be pretty easy to find the font in the windows version. Assuming you have the latest version of the game, it should be in "/Root Access-1.1-win/game/Dosis-Medium.ttf".

Terrible. First off you're mixing MS-DOS and bash. Past there if you're going to include real world things like .sh shell scripts actually use real world commands. I should be able to use bash launchme.sh, ./launch_me.sh or sh launchme.sh but none work. 0/10 at this point.

Edit: So according to the tutorial the cd command should work and it does work in the tutorial. It just.. doesn't work in the actual game.

But this isn't a game for hackers/programmers, it's a game for novices. Commands like cd and dir are straightforward and necessary for gameplay to work, but ./ for executing programs would just add needless complexity, and probably confuse most players more. I'm already acutely aware of how the game is simplistic and inaccurate, but you have to remember that it isn't a sim: I only added as many commands and as much complexity as was required to enable the gameplay I had in mind (hence why cd only works for one folder level), the fact that they are real world commands of any sort is purely arbitrary,

The cd command also works just fine. Perhaps you're forgetting the "/" after the folder name when using it?

Edit Edit: It might be a bit more complex I will admit that. Starting out I spent half an hour trying to figure things out because I was going by bash and ms-dos commands. I apologize that I was so rude about it. I will say one thing. If anything you should add different error messages. If a command such as cd is used but the directory doesn't exist it's much easier for the player if it says the directory doesn't exist instead of saying the command doesn't exist.

It might be me being thick but in the second stage I got an exception:
//----
I'm sorry, but an uncaught exception occurred.

While running game code:
File "game/start.rpy", line 195, in script
Exception: Unknown text tag u"'name': 'CRLSet', 'version': '0'"
//----

Is that expected?

Nope, that ought not to happen. A couple of people have reported bugs, so I'm going to look into it this evening and try to push out an update asap.

I think I got it. If you download the latest build, it should be fixed.
