Expect to see a lot of limited green palettes over the next coming days as the GBJam has come to a close, and developers are spewing their games out left, right and center. First up on our little list here is Nik Sudan, who has made a game called Zerox Residuum. It’s as simple as most GameBoy games need to be: there’s a robotic race called Zerox that have taken over the Earth and killed the majority of the human population. What does that cue? A hero, of course, with a mission to take down the five huge leaders and find salvation in their demise.

I made a video on this as a part of my "First Impressions" series! Check it out if you want to, and feel free to leave any constructive criticism in my comment section or on the discussion tab on my channel! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mt_vGtowmCA

This is a really great game. I've spent about an hour with it, and thank god for the saving feature because it has been fun but I don't want to lose my progress. Anyway, I love the sound effects and the retro feel. I wish the controls could be inverted but that doesn't really take away from the experience. Now for an in depth review... The gameplay was smooth and simple. Adding to this was the sound which gave it an amazing retro feel to it, especially the shooting sounds and the music. The overworld was also well done as it transitioned into a grid-based movement system, and while most games make the overworld seem like it breaks the flow of the game, you did it perfectly here, especially with the "opening" transitions. Another thing that caught my eye was that there seemed to be infinite paths at the beginning before I got oriented in the game. This is both a good thing and a bad thing, but overall it just made the game more immersive because I felt like I was a part of this retro world as I felt lost and explored the depths of what the world had to offer. Also, I don't know if this was intentional or not, but with the tank battle I had no idea that I had to crouch, so I kept dying like an idiot... Maybe there should have been a crouch prompt, or maybe I was just too dumb to notice it? Either way, that's user error, and it's part of learning to play a game. You don't have to spoon-feed the user. Overall this was a great experience, even if I kept dying and I didn't get very far. 5/5, well done!

Hey, thanks! Wow, an hour? I should make more games like this. And crouching is essential in this game! You won't get very far without it! I kind of just threw in the player into the world to discover their controls, maybe the room at the start could have briefed them hmm. Thanks for playing!

This may seem dumb to ask, but is there any way to save your game?

i love the game, the design, the boss battles, and i love how it brings back the gameboy ages. but there is one flaw. it isn't very interesting after a while. It does tend to get a bit repetitive and annoying. other than that, i love it.
