The Art of Dying is a really challenging platformer I've made in AGS. It features two difficulty levels (really hard and unbelievably really f*cking hard), a six level campaign and a full-featured level editor.

You can make your own levels, then share them and find others to download and try to beat yourself on the official level sharing platform: http://dkh.agser.me/die. Gamepads and other external controllers are fully supported, although the controls work nicely on keyboard as well.

Oh, a really challenging 2D platformer, we better play that”, my brain tells me. Several deaths later I start to hate my brain and question why I let it make decisions for us. The Art of Dying was released today and it really isn’t joking around with its difficulty. While I’m sure it’s not the hardest 2D platformer out there (we have a list for that), it certainly has a place among them.

I enjoyed this game very much. I like games with a challenge, even though I am god-awful at them. The graphics and music blended together beautifully and created an experience fit for any self-respecting retro lover. I recorded an episode of the game. I did an awful job doing it any justice but it's still fun to watch. The link to the video is below. Hope you all enjoy!

Thanks for making this game.

It's nice to see a game that's actually difficult but well made every once in awhile. With an influx of "rage games" that simply rely on cheesy gimmicks like invisible platformers or that garbage, The Art of Dying is difficult as hell without making the player say "HOW IS THIS FAIR?"

I talk about this a bit more in my video about the game:

I loved it as infuriating as it was lol. I made a let's play of the first 4 levels because I couldn't get past the last part of lvl 4. I also started my run on the hard difficulty which probably did me no favors. Check it out: http://bit.ly/TheartofdyingEp2 I will also link this page on my vids shortly as well.

Haha nice, enjoyed watching your videos a lot! You're pretty damn good at the game too, ~100 deaths is not a lot considering how far you got! The way to beat that last part is to make sure you have the shield, as you said, and then just rush it up there.

Thanks for watching the videos. I will definitely give it a shot to see the other levels. I also added a link to this page from my video so they can play too. It looks like I'm the only youtuber at the time of this writing to have covered your game to this point, maybe I can be the one to take it to the last level. Thanks for your support!

Thanks nailgrinder! I'm happy for everybody that can enjoy my game despite or maybe even because of its pretty intense difficulty level. Not everybody's cup of tea for sure! :)

Thanks, I'm glad that it looks like I didn't screw the controls up too bad. That was really my goal with the game, because controls mean everything, in my opinion. An amazing game with bad controls is, in the end, a bad game. A decent controls with good controls is a good game. That's even more the case with a fast action platformer like The Art of Dying.

Thanks, have you finished all six levels on the harder difficulty setting already? There are two more level packs on the website (http://dkh.agser.me/die) which are user-made and really challenging! I won't have a lot of time to make more levels in the near future, unfortunately, but that's what the editor is for. You could even make your own levels and share them with us! :)

I am blown away that this was made with AGS more than anything. The controls are tight, it runs at 60 fps, and gamepad support(!!!). Phenomenal job!

Thanks, I made it specifically in AGS because there aren't many platformers like this out there made with that engine. It was part of the challenge, so to speak! :)

Hm that's weird, haven't heard of anybody else having that bug before. Unfortunately this is an engine bug - the game was made with Adventure Game Studio - and I won't be able to do much against it. How frequently does it happen? Can you still play the game? Is it still playable?
