CHAPTER 6 - DEVIL REEF

BRIEFING. "DEVIL REEF was once the scene of ritual offerings to the Deep Ones until an FBI raid put a stop to it. Outraged, sea god Dagon and the numberless Deep Ones invade the surface world, killing millions."
OBJECTIVE. "Maybe if we destroy Dagon, himself, the Deep Ones will cancel their raid."
THE MORTEPENDIUM SAYS... "Don't be fooled by grotesque looks: being a Deep One has its benefits!"

~o~ The Temple ~o~
East of your starting position is the Temple of Dagon, which houses half the realm's puzzles. It's also infested with DEEP ONES who will emerge from the deep water and attack you. They're immune to fire, so MOLOTOV COCKTAILS and most ANKH powers are useless against them; but the CULTISTS peppering the map are as easily killed as ever.
The main chamber of the temple has a pair of STATUES at its center, and a locked door on the north end. Beyond this door are two gray FLOOR SWITCHES on either side of the room; and, behind two more doors, the TIARA OF Y'HA-NTHLEI. The SWITCHES open these doors when their respective STATUES are pushed onto them with THOR'S HAMMER.
When the TIARA is your selected item, you transform into a DEEP ONE and can swim in deep water. Enemies won't appear while you explore as a DEEP ONE (except SHOGGOTHS, who are indiscriminate), but if they see you transform they'll know you're an impostor.
East of the main chamber is a grotto leading to the sacrificial chamber, where you'll find THOR'S HAMMER, a sleepy Ammut, and a GONG. The MORTEPENDIUM is hidden behind the northwest STATUE. As usual, the GONG is nothing but trouble: hit it and you'll be teleported to DAGON's lair at the head of the Underground River, where there is no escape for a human but death.
~o~ The Cavern ~o~
A small canal connects to the Underground River via the caverns west of your starting position. When you first set foot on dry land, the path forks and goes west and north.
The west path leads to a treacherous area with lots of deep water, and a small islet with a BAG OF JELLY BABIES. If you're feeling bold you can try for the two ANKHS, but one misstep and you'll fall into the water and drown.
The north path leads to two GREEN FLOOR SWITCHES that only DEEP ONES can press -- one is easily accessed on land, but the other is accessed via the canal (which you can't swim in) and guarded by a SHOGGOTH. Tricking a DEEP ONE into pressing these SWITCHES for you is virtually impossible, so your best bet is to use the TIARA to turn into a DEEP ONE and press them yourself. The SWITCHES open the canal's SLUICE GATES, allowing you to swim the entire length of the canal.
~o~ The Mine ~o~
Further north and across several bridges is a meager treasure trove with a SHOTGUN, and a rather dangerous looking SEA MINE propped up against the wall by a wooden trunk. Don't touch it with anything -- it's not a dud, and the blast will kill you outright. The chest can be moved aside with THOR'S HAMMER, which will start the SEA MINE rolling: it plops into the water and begins a seaward journey down the canal, but detonates on contact with the SLUICE GATES or any living thing that crosses its path. If you dislodge it after opening both SLUICE GATES, the SEA MINE comes to rest at the opening to the Underground River, where it drifts back and forth as if on patrol.
~o~ The Underground River ~o~
North of your starting position is endless deep water: a long, winding river cuts through the earth and culminates in the large cave DAGON calls home. At the center is a tiny islet with a carelessly discarded KEY, which you need in order to reach the TIARA. Send Ammut to fetch it for you.
~o~ Dagon ~o~
You have the TIARA and the SEA MINE has escaped the canal: it's time to ring the GONG and awaken DAGON. He'll be itching for a snack, and none of your weapons leave so much as a scratch on him. Swim! Swim for your life!
DAGON will be right behind you everywhere you turn, so flee back down the Underground River to your starting position. The way has been blocked by several doors -- you're trapped!
Fortunately that old SEA MINE is trapped in here with you. Put it between yourself and DAGON to bring the realm to an explosive conclusion. Be careful -- its blast radius is huge, so pulling this off might be tricky at first.
DAGON coughs up a YELLOW SIGN when you blow him to fish sticks.
