Logging

By runewake2 on 9/6/2012

Earlier today, a new beta version of Dark Time has been released. The update includes a number of fixes and also has a number of new features including the addition of running and a new menu.

Less notibly, Dark Time's logger has been updated to include some extra data.

For example, my computer logs something like this:

Starting Dark Time
OS: Windows 8
CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor
CPU Cores: 6
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460
Shader Model: 3
Renderer: Deferred
Initializing Physics
Physics Initialized
Skipping Introduction
Returning To Menu
Loading World: data/World/0.story/0.world

With this information I can more easily identify problems when they occur and also keep track of key events such as loading levels, changing states and important hardware and OS details.  Ideally, this will make finding issues a lot easier as simply submitting the log file will help find the issue.

Obviously this solution is not complete yet, and there are still a number of things that could and will be added to make this a better solution for debugging, however, it is a significant improvement over the old logger which only logged State changes.

I should note that the log files are stored 100% on your own PC and are never submitted by the game. So your OS and hardware specs will not be collected unless you want them to.
