Meet Gray - an unbearably cute and insanely smart alien. Follow his unfortunate excursion to Planet Earth. Help him conquer Earth. "Gray" is a retro adventure game -- a classic point&clicker with 320x240 graphics in 4C (four colors!), with mesmerizing original soundtrack, lots of crazy dialogues, informative monologues, ridiculous riddles, snide humor, useless trivia, occasional vandalism and good ol' pixel hunting.

You've done an amazing job with your chosen colour palette. I would however say this game is too "wordy" despite that being the point. I don't know:- maybe I've grown too old for old-school adventure games!

Yeah, I get that a lot -- and I do understand why :) Can't blame anyone for being overwhelmed with the amount of text at times. I will try to keep my future games more concise and straight-to-the-point. But with this character it felt natural: all the encyclopedic explanations, going off on tangents, etc. It was a way of keeping myself entertained while writing all this stuff -- and trust me, it was a LOT of writing :P Aaanyway, glad you liked it! Thanks for playing and commenting!

>a LOT of writing
I bet!
None the less it's not a mark against your game; a lot of my favorite old adventure games (BASS and Maniac Mansion) were very much on the wordy side.

I look forward to more adventure games from you!

The whole dialogue list was about 100 print pages long. And then I had to translate it into my native language. So call that a leasson learned ;) My next big project will definitely be less wordy -- or at least verbose in a completely different way. I already have some rough ideas that need to be put together into a proper story, and even some character sketches -- but seeing as Gray took me 2 years and 3 months to complete, it might take a while :) BUT I will try to release something smaller every once in a while, most likely some short games starring Gray.

how do i run it?

Fitz
Download the game, unzip it, and then in the game's folder run the file called Gray.exe (the one with the alien icon). Also, in case of trouble, check out ReadMe, everything's explained there :)

Good job on Gray! I really really like it, however the only con, which I'm sure is mentioned somewhere below, is that some hints throughout the game or guidance would be great. At first I wasn't really sure what to do, the "walk, grab, talk, and inventory" buttons weren't labeled (even though they are animated you can figure them out but still, pretend I'm dumb). Other than that, I thought it was spectacular :)

Yeah, i get what you mean. Some of the icons are too obscure, indeed (especially the lower right ones). My reasoning was: if you don't know what it does try it -- but perhaps there was a more elegant way to go about it. Will definitely consider it in my future projects -- and maybe update Gray's GUI accordingly in some update, too?

One Word this game is a total uniquenesses lol.. Anyway I love it even it's a 4-bit colored game but I'm pretty stuck on the level about the ciggarete I already get the ciggarete and give to that farmer but he just throw it off.. How can I get pass to it? Anyway I would love if you will create/make a walkthrough of this game and put it on this game's downloads.

Yeah, it's a tricky one -- mostly because I had this crazy idea that isn't easy to figure out. One hint: you can talk to everything, not just people :) So there's something else you can -- and need to -- have a chat with.
As far as a walkthrough is concerned, a very friendly reviewer at jayisgames did that for me :D Here it is: http://jayisgames.com/archives/2013/02/gray_fitz.php#walkthrough -- just click on Show Spoiler to reveal different sections of the walkthrough. So that'll get you started. But I think it's more fun to try everything on everything :)

Wow, a video review -- fun fun fun :) It's interesting for me to see/hear someone playing and commenting as they go along, One thing I noticed, though, is the music is out of sync with the events (basically, it goes much faster than the action, and it goes silent around the time Gray takes off from the Moon). Did you modify the game speed? If so, reset it to default for best experience. Hope it's not a cpu speed issue.

Twilight Sirius
Well.. I didn't move the game speed or so.. I think it's because of the Fraps and the encoding thingy well I think I'll try to default it. But anyway thanks for creating this game I think this is the best retro game I've ever played, 1 question though will you make a sequel?
posted 3 months ago / user rated game: 5

Fitz
Try playing the game without any additional video capturing software and see if it's any different. I watched the whole video and I see that in the intro the action is much slower than the music, and then in the meadow (with the beehive), it's actually much faster. STILL, it's awesome that you took the time to play and record it, much appreciated :) And yes, I'm planning on another game with Gray in it -- but it's going to be different than this one, with different game mechanics. And probably much, much crazier :D

Twilight Sirius
Nothing Different at all I think it's because the speed because if you default it the speed is like it's in 30%. So nothing, What if I'll move the speed a little fast? Anyway it's great! Another Gray game! I'll look forward to it anyway, 1 question What Game Engine are you using to create Gray, how about the sequel's game engine? Will it be the same?
posted 3 months ago / user rated game: 5

Fitz
I'm not sure what the problem is, but my friend who did the music for Gray also sent me a song that he wrote for the intro (which he captured with some video software), and the audio didn't match the actual game either, it was slower. So I'm not sure where the problem is. Have you tried playing the game without the video-capture -- and on Default settings?
As for the game engine, I'm using Adventure Game Studio ( http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/ ) -- and yeah, I'll be using it for the sequel, too. I have great plans for Unity engine, in some distant future, but for now AGS works for me, I know it a little and I know what kind of things I can do with it and how :)

Super fun! The animation is amazing, the humour's sharp and I love all the fun facts! It's fun using every item on everything since everything provides dialogue. I laughed out loud a lot playing this. I'm stuck near the end though, trying to find a pillow... also, at the campsite, if you move a tiny amount at a time, you can reach the other end of the map without being knocked back. This definitely deserved the feature!

Fitz
Let me help you out. Small hints, so you can stop reading when you think you've figured it out.

1. The pillow will be something of a similar nature as the sun.

2. You'll find it in a different location. You should notice it, because it appears only after you've talked to the Sun.

3. You'll also need something that you'll find by the lake.

These are just basic hints to get you started, and some trouble people generally had with it, it's actually quite a long quest, and I don't want to spoil the rest for you (though if you happen to have more questions, feel free to ask). And you're totally right about the glitch! Had to check the code if that's possible -- and yeah, my bad :) Oh well, let's say it's an easter egg :P
Individual responses to everything are my pride in this game :) You can use, touch, look at and talk to everything, and a lot of times you'll get different responses depending on the situation's changed. It was a hellish amount of work to write, then script, and THEN also translate. So I'll definitely think twice before doing that in any future project -- but it was fun nonetheless :) Glad people are enjoying it!
And congrats on your feature, too! I'll have to play it, I'm a total sucker for those logic/arcade games. Have you played Ambidextrous?

StuStutheBloo
Beat it! I knew what to use as the pillow, but my pixel hunting skills aren't up to scratch :P I haven't played Ambidextrous- I'll have to check it out!

This game is really impressive. I especially love the intro sequence. It was so cinematic.
posted 3 months ago / user rated game: 5

Fitz
Yeah, cinematic was what I was going for -- but it's the music (that my buddy made) that made it feel complete. We listened to a lot of Holst's "Mars, the Bringer of War" for the sequence of appraching Earth.

Good game, that intro sequence was really well done.

Thanks :) That intro was definitely fun to make!

I'm actually going to make little updates to it every now and then. First thing that comes to mind is more animations to the farmer -- and more bedtime stories. There's also probably going to be an Easter Egg Editions (if I can make it by Easter), and more language versions. What would YOU like to see more of in the game?

Bowmaniac_TU
A bigger story or a 2nd version,i'll really apreciate it!!! ^^

I had alot of fun playing it !

Fitz
Hooo boy, that's a big request ;) But who knows, I might just do an alternative version one day: like a hardcore one, with more objects and puzzles (like, you have to do ten things instead of two), or same objects, completely different puzzles? Someday, maybe? Meanwhile, I'm thinking about new projects :)

Honestly I love the color scheme. It reminds me of old childrens' books. (: It's so soft and calming and what not..
posted 3 months ago / user rated game: 5

Fitz
Soft and calming? Have you played through the part where the sky is red? ;) I think it's the music that makes it seem calm in the meadow, the orchard, woods and the lake -- but the evening at the farm is downright trippy :D Aaaanyway, thanks for playing and the awesome feedback! :)
