Thanks a lot to everyone for their feedback so far. I'm no longer working on this, but I'd still like to hear what you think.

I know it's a stylistic choice but the character art seemed a little childish for the tone. I don't so much mean the blockiness, more the color palette and facial features. If the textures were all desaturated a bit and the face made blank I think it would feel much more haunting.
second attempt: decided to give it a second go, and tried walking along the walls and clicking for hidden stuff again. found the door by pure luck. shouldn't be this hard to locate something important (like a door) or basic (like a door). i could see it adding to the atmosphere and gameplay if i had to use a flashlight to spot important things in the dark. but as it is, creepy atmosphere or not, you'll probably discourage lots of first-time players from giving this a chance -- especially if the gameplay resembles trying to find one's car keys after dropping them in a large house during a power out.
Though I'm still not sure why horror themed games persist on having tank controls.
