Zombie Movie is an intense isometric shooter that takes place during the filming of a famous (and obviously), a-lot-of-dead-zombies type movie. Your goal is to make as much points as possible by killing different zombie types during about 6 minutes.

First of all, the game starts with a movie director telling instructions to the main character, the hero (you). Throughout this movie, your goal is to kill as much zombies as you can. To do so, you will be procured weapons as you progress (kill zombies) through the 6 minutes 30 seconds maximum length movie. In other words, you have 00:06:30 to kills as much zombies as you can.

Your overall score as well as other statistics will determine if the movie was appreciated or not. In order to make as much points as you can, you got to stay as near as you can to the helicopter's shadow (where the director is filming from). By doing so, the camera will record a better image of your actions, therefore, you may earn up to ten times the points you could of earned by killing a zombie. You can also earn bonus points from streaks. Streaks are obtained when you kill more than one zombie in a row (sniper may be useful for that type of combo).

That's all, I will let you discover the rest. Careful, this game is hard and requires strategy.

Here are some information you might be interested in:

150 kills = Sniper Rifle
550 Kills = Rocket Launcher
1250 kills = surprise weapon (not a big surprise)

The game features online high score. Hopefully, we will meet you there :).

From the NextDoorGames' team,

Have fun!

I'm sorry. I have to get back my 5 and give you a 4. Just because ESC key reset the game and your score ... P button for pause is not a good idea, i think.

What is the matter with ESC? It was the guidelines of the contest we entered with this game. Sorry :-(

Just downloaded and played for a few rounds, so I'm judging it on initial impression.

Have to say it gets difficult past the sniper rifle because it is not easy to reach the supplies and each subsequent gun has less and less ammo (even though it gets easier and easier to kill mobs). I know it is possible to lure the zombies over and make use of the kamikazes, but usually when I do that and then run off to grab the supply, it disappears by then because I have to maneuver past the tonnes of zombies who are still in the way and the fact that the helicopter follows the crowd (in addition to the bonus, the helicopter will drop supplies directly below rather than throw it towards a secluded spot). This is also despite the fact that the helicopter occasionally guns down nearby zombies - doesn't seem to be really helping at the later stages of the game.

I praise the implementation of the stopping of movement during shooting. It wouldn't really hinder your run&gun tactics and it works really well with players who decide to camp at a spot and shoot for a while before moving on.

Overall, I don't think its the type of game I'd be committed to, but I do enjoy it as a form of quick entertainment. I believe with some practice(with my aiming) I will be able to enjoy the game more. There could be an endless survival mode for players who are really good at it too instead of being strictly restricted to 6 and a half minutes.

    Good work!

Good game here. I would have given it a 5, but there is no option to change the controls!!! I mean, real gamers are used to wasd being their mvmt keys, so please give us this option.
Really good game though, kudos. I didn't find anything wrong with it other than the movement. Oh, I would say that you should make it where you can move and shoot at the same time, rather than have the guy crouch every time you fire a shot.

We made this game for a competition with the arrows constraint at first so we didn't think of that kind of option. The crouch/shoot was part of the idea and we tought it would make the gameplay unique since it's a zombi game where you run from the them. We didn't want the player to run into zombies while aiming so straffing would be the obvious choice but that would not suit the not-automatic weapons. Thanks for feedback.

This game is way too slow on my hardware.
I know that Game Maker puts unnessesary effort into displaying graphics on the screen, but you could have used some tricks to make it faster, such as making instances invisible when they are outside the view.
Please add an option to turn off the blood, it just slows things down heaps.
The game itself is alright but its bland and boring (that can happen at low fps's) this game could be better.

Hi there, thanks for replying. Actually, I have optimised this game as much as I could. I tested it on my school's crappy computers and it ran alright.

If I disable blood, it will change the whole gameplay unfortunately :(. Is it lagging from the beginning or after a while?

i think that the hard part of this game is the health navagation, although the screen effects are cool when you are about to die, im interested into how much life is remaining, like a small hp bar above the character?
i also think that the weapons should be switchable when you earn them, and have separate ammo, i mean the pistol has like 20 clip and the sniper has 10 clip, and when the spawn gets crazy and the heli goes too far in, the extra ammo helps. also i would think an graphical upgrade for the gun on the character would be very cool, so that you can see the character use the sniper rifle? i also think that when you get a certain multiplier it should shoot above the zombies telling the ?x multiplier, making it very arcadey.
This game is overall phenomenal, i would think that upgrades like flame ammo which you pick up or a shotgun to help clear the zombie flood. or a grenade launcher, since in the beginning of the game the sniper rifle is hard to mitigate alarge zombie horde of 5*5 zombies. i think you can make it harder by adding a cone on the heli that you can only get points when u are in its field of vision. Great game. hope comments help

I've given this a three, which may seem a little unfair considering I've given many shorter games a rating of 4.

I like that you've added multiple levels, but I'd like to be able to select which stage to play on from perhaps a level select option on the menu. You've got to remember that when you increase complexity, the user is /will/ expect more from you. :)

I was also quite disappointed (as were a few other people) that the helicopter did not follow me around the map dropping goodies where I could access them easily. If your argument is "it's an action movie" then sure, I'm the movie star, film me! Similarly, if your argument is "there's a certain tactic" then that just shows that the game is very simple and lacks diversity; and without diversity, where's the replay value?

Speaking of replay value, do you plan on putting the GJ achievements into this game? I feel that achievements may be just the right touch to get a third play out of me. :)

  • NextDoorGames

    NextDoorGames said 2 years ago

Absolutely, we plan on adding the GJ achievement :) But it is in closed beta right now. We made it random because there are not enough levels yet (and we don't plan on adding more since we are busy with other games). However, about the copter things. What most people don't understand is that the director obligates you to be in the middle of the action (since he wants to make the best movie possible). Where would be the fun if everything would fall on you? Right now, it is much more fun to try to zigzag through the hundred on zombie trying to get a crate of ammo or health then moving back and sniping 40 zombies :). Otherwise, it would be too much easy :(.

Thanks for the comments thought. Me and my partner are pretty satisfied of how the game has been designed. We understand it does not fit a large market however, for those who enjoy hardcore shooter, they will enjoy this one :). Try getting the rocket launcher and staying in the copter's shadow. Time you shot and you should be good to do about 30k ;).

Indeed the point of the game is the risk/reward involved in following the copter. The scenario was there to support the gameplay, not the other way around. We just wanted to make it difficult to get the camera bonus score and we designed the game around this feature.

    Thanks for feedback!

I think it's perfect. Sure you can't always aim perfectly while standing on one place, but this is the whole point of the game, isn't it?

Too bad you can't choose the location tough...

    1. You need to release arrow keys at exact moment? This make absolutely no sens, please tell us how you wanted them to make it better. I think it was a good idea to stop the player when shooting to stop him from running into zombies.

    2. UI isn't perfect or pretty, but don't expect us to put it in the center of the screen. It's meant to look like a camera UI and not distracting. Just stop trying to shoot when you hear that click, your brain/eye coordination just seem really bad and that's what this game is about, I don't really understand how you freeze yourself.

    3. Yeah the shadows stack.. It's not that easy to fix so we live with it.

    4. We tought of calling it Undead Movie, but we think it's a good name. This game is about zombie movies, so we took our own definition.

    5. Actually, the easiest stage is the one without car. So it's balancing in some way that there is no car. A little bit of luck doesn't hurt and can always add some replayability, but seriously saying that a lot of luck depens on randomization prove that you spent more time writing this than playing the game.

    6. Once again, the copter goes exactly where zombies are to make the game hard and the movie good. Every 30 seconds, he will move away from the zombies and start shooting, you're supposed to make good use of that. This is definately as designed, the director want zombie action and gameplay turns around that. The game would be too easy otherwise and would go against the design and score system. The difficulty adapts to the greed for score of the player.

    7. I totally agree only the highscore matters, it was just a bonus feature made for fun. Some people like stats. Sorry you didn't like the game theme. I could have been a standard zombi killing game.

Thanks for your feedback and taking the time to register an account to write this review. Basically from what you say I guess the whole game is bad since there seem to be no major way on transforming this game to deserve a better

I'm sorry to say this but this game is an exercise in bad design. The only reason it's worth playing is because it's challenging, but that is secondary because this game is challenging for all the wrong reasons. I am just flabbergasted that it has received such a high rating from everyone else who's posted in this thread, so I'm just going to list the reasons I think this game... well... sucks.

    1) Controls are just plain horrible. It is the game's main source of challenge. Shooting diagonally is extremely unreliable, and plain frustrating. One can barely shoot without moving, but for diagonal shots it is far worse. In order to stay in the same place aiming diagonally, you need to release the arrow keys at exactly the same moment, which is surprisingly harder than you would expect when you're playing using two fingers on the keyboards. The lack of an option to switch between wasd and arrow keys is also sadly excluded.

    2) The ammo/reload system and UI are terrible. When you try to fire without bullets, you will hear a *click* sound as your character is frozen in place for a split second. There's a need to be constantly aware when you've fired your last round, or you risk accidentally freezing yourself. The UI is not helpful, and is located really far away from the center of action, even though you tend to run out of ammo really often. The 'cooldown' or 'reload' bar is a pointless addition.

    3) The retro art actually don't look too bad, but the way the shadow of the copter and its bullets simply look wrong. The bullets' shadow are darker than the shadow of the helicopter, and originate from the center of the copter's shadow.

    4) Enemy design is forgettable. The first two enemies look like zombies, but then you soon get attacked by red balls with eyes and Shadowy humanoids that look more like vampires/catwomen. You need to look up the definition of zombies.

    5) Level design has imbalances. Certain stage has cars which explode when you shoot them, whereas the

    5) Level design has imbalances. Certain stage has cars which explode when you shoot them, whereas they don't appear in other stages. It's not a problem by itself, except that stages are also randomly loaded when you play the game. Given that the point of the game is to achieve a high score, rather than complete stages, a lot can rest on that aspect of luck.

    6) Even more luck is involved in the movement of the copter. You would think that a movie director would be smart enough to have the copter chase after the movie star if he was running circles around the movie set for a long time, but no. The copter moves inexplicably, and more often than not stays in the same place near the center, where the the zombies are allowed to swarm all over the supplies that it drops.

    7) The premise itself is ridiculous and over the top, but hardly enough is done to sustain the humour involved. After dying, you're tossed to a screen filled with irrelevant information (only the highscore matters, really), where you press a key to view a short bunch of comments on the movie. The humour runs dry very quickly. In the end, there's hardly any reason to play.

I think you're being rude and unbias. First of all, this game has not been designed for every gamers. I understand there are some points that need to be fixed such as the UI (which is horribly placed, I must admit). But take Halo 3 for example, new players will never look at the UI to make sure they have ammo. However, advanced one look at it all the time. It is all a question of getting used to it. You're point about the sfx makes no sense, please read what you said and explain it again.

The controls... Please learn how isometric works before arguing that controls suck. If you can shoot in diagonal, don't. Not every game has features that everyone can use and enjoy. Diagonal shots in ours are not made for everyone and obviously not for you.

I think you COMPLETELY misunderstood the point of the game. The goal of director is to have an action movie, this is why he patrols around the "hot spot" (where zombies or UNDEAD are) whereas you need to go to to collect ammo/health and make points. It is not luck at all, the game has been completely designed so the least luck would be involved. The helicopter uses a fairly easy to remember path (and logic). This game has been designed to obligate you to move where there are "Zombies."

You talked about unbalanes? You must have not played the game many times. Yes there are exploding cars but the one without them appears to be MUCH easier.

Some of your arguments are ridiculous.

Oh and about the title... yes they are undeads, we know what zombies are but who cares? I mean on the first part appeared zombies... then undeads... there are no complain to do about this.

Before posting such comments you should be able to research a little bit on the subject. You lacked criticism and was completely out of the track. This game was not designed for you this is all you have to understand.

I apologize for being rude earlier. I saw the great score, and was just massively disappointed. I do not know what you mean when you say that my arguments are 'ridiculous'. They are strongly worded, I will admit, but if you think my reasoning is flawed, then by all means point out what those flaws are. On that note, I'm not really sure some of your counterarguments have done you any favour.

For example, rather than dispute the imbalances in level design I have pointed out, you point out that there are greater imbalanced I have not noticed. You also bit the bullet and admitted that you don't care about something in your game.

I certainly did not "lack criticism" - I provided plenty of valid criticism, and I stand by most of them, except perhaps the one about the copter algorithm being random, since you say it isn't. I know I used emotional and hyperbolic language, but if you're not the kind of designer that can filter out what is relevant to you, then all I can say is they were not designed for you, but perhaps other gamers who are just as would be as frustrated as I am.

I was rude first, I'll clarifying I'm not suddenly pretending to take the high road now. That said, ratings are free for the public to vote on, and at the very least I provided my reasons for giving the rating I did. I don't go around playing sports games and rating them 1 just because I don't like sports games, but as someone who tends to like shooters (even some hardcore ones), I'm not going to be stand around and be told to shut up and not post my comments.

  • NextDoorGames

    NextDoorGames said 2 years ago

Sorry for reacting as I did (I did like you, I used emotional arguments). I understand it can be frustrating to see all those highscore. First of all, I did not point out greated imbalances, I am just saying that everything has been designed in a way where there is the least luck involved possible. Also, I said that in egypt there are no exploding car since the level is easier (which makes sense). The game takes some time to get used (like every great games) to but once you mastered the controles, it is very fun to kill 100 zombies in one shot.

I will release a new version asap with the UI fixed. Thanks for the criticism but I truely think that some of your arguments are not well justified such as the one about sfx. I did not quite understand this one. I really want to satisfy you but I think that you got frustrated and criticised every aspect of the game even tho it had no impact on the gameplay (such as the bullet's shadow). Anyways, I kinda enjoyed reading your comment but I really don't understand how this game could be worth a 1. Even with those reasons, this game is not worth a 1.

I hope you will play it more. If you do so, please tell me what's going on gameplaywise.
