BloodStreak's Stealth or Skill Contest

Forum Listing » Contests Forum » View Topic

  • I've decided to host a contest, as I like seeing what people come up with. The theme is "Medieval." As the title implies, what your task is is to try and use the theme in the most sutible way for you. For you few who do not know what Medieval is, it was an era lasting over a thousand years, also known as the Middle Ages and the Dark Ages. In many RPG games it is considered the core of magic and mystical creatures.

Not the theme anymore! The new theme is "Stealth or Skill", which means you could make a stealth game (ect. Thief, Assassin's Creed) or make a game where the main character has some sort of specific skill, (for example, he could be a priest (praying), an assassin (killing), a geek (being weird) or anything!)

For those of you who've already started their Medieval game and it doesn't fit with the new theme, then just post your entry anyway as it'll still be considered.

(BTW, I've also extended the deadline by a month)

    Rules:

Must be original and designed for this contest only

Teams are allowed but only a maximum of 4 per group

Game must be based around the contest theme

Only a maximum of 2 entrys per dev/team

Game Maker is the preferred engine but not a requirement

All games must be submitted by May 30th (yes, I'm being fair for once)

    Prizes:

A short trailer designed by me to promote your game - 3rd Place

A full-length trailer designed by me to promote your game - 2nd Place

    Grand Prize:

    For Game Maker games:

A review on the GameMaker Blog (I've applied for a job, so if I get it it should be easy to sort out)

If the game is not made with Game Maker:

Both the 2nd and 3rd place prizes, plus something else if I come up with anything good enough.

    How to enter:

Simply submit your awesome game on this site and post the link in the topic.

    Judges:

    These are the current judges:

    Blood Streak (me)

    YellowAfterlife

If you would like to be a judge in the competition, simply comment on this topic saying why you want to be a judge and why you think you'd be good at it.

    Entries:

Art of War - By Noidea

Note: You can't enter the competition if you're a judge. I would have though that was pretty clear otherwise.

I look forward to seeing what your awesome creative minds can come up with,

    Blood Streak

  • This should certainly be interesting if it gets a few entries, looking forward to it.

  • Yeah it would be. Just hoping someone will actually enter...

  • If you have not done already, it might be a good idea to post it elsewhere too. Perhaps TIGS or YYG or something.

  • I've not tried TIGS.... Ill go put it there aswell.

  • I started making this game for it... How much more medieval can you get than sword(staff)fighting? http://gamejolt.com/freeware/games/adventure/art-of-war/1596/
  • Im entering, because im making a game, perfect for this theme!

(I just started it today so yeah,)

Well, depends, on how the engine goes

  • Changed the theme to "Stealth or Skill", but if you're making a game for the medieval theme and can't make it fit with the new one, then just post it anyway. I'll still consider it.

  • I'll try to make something up.

  • Wait. FIrst the 1st prize - is unsure. Second, I'm not making the game on GM, so I wil receive both the 2nd and 3rd prize? Which is much the same. Also, do you have examples of trailers that you have made, and also as the prizes seems to be free advertisement, do you have credentials of your ability to advertise a project that will really get attention?

I don't know, people mainly look at the prizes before deciding to join a competition. So to get more competitiors, the prizes should be sure and have been thought up before starting the contest.

  • And you can't randomly change the theme. I'm out.

  • ...Your game still fits it though. It's based on the skill of staff fighting.

  • Now there's where the vagueness of the contest comes in. Almost all games could be tagged with the 'skill of..' , skill of stacking blocks, skill of shooting aliens, skill of jumping over enemies, skill of finding stuff, skill of dating girls, EVERY single game works with the theme. Which makes it not a contest of a single theme. Also, the switch between themes makes the whole thing harder to judge because there's already difference in themes. It's like a beauty contest suddenly became a gourmet contest.

And lastly, the prizes. ALl contest must have some prize or something to make it feel like an accomplishment for the winners. But the prize seems uncertain, like offering a Billion dollar as prize but then suddenly it will be announced that the prize would change because they weren't able t save up to a bllion for the contest.

I won't deem the whole contest as failure but it could use some work. Think in the developers' shoes, they'll be using their time making an entry for this so it should also be expected that the rules and technicalities of the contest is stable.

  • What Prince said.
