Rogue Contest Results
Posted On 1/31/2010 By KniteBlargh
There may not have been as many entries this time around as there were for the minimal contest, but we sure did get some gems out of this one! From space exploration to experimental game design, participating developers showed us just how many directions the word "rogue" can take. We know it wasn't easy for everyone in view of the fact that there have been quite a few other contests running at the same time, so we commend everyone that spent precious time to contribute; thank you!
Okay okay, so who won? Let's see!
Winners
1st Place
Super Space Rogues
Procedurally generated solar systems, space exploration, pirates, an awesome plot, I mean seriously, is there anything that isn't cool about this game? This entry hits the theme on so many levels. After playing for a bit, it becomes apparent that you really need to use some forethought as far as the order in which you upgrade your ship, and which planets you should travel to first so as to hopefully avoid the majority of the space pirates. The battles are intense, and the chilling music contributed by Heatex really adds to that tense vibe. It's also pretty awesome that Ted Lauterbach gave players the option to go against what might be considered the right thing to do in the game, such as destroying space stations for extra cash.
2nd Place
TowerClimb
Want a game that has overflowing loads of replay value? Yeah, this is pretty much just that. The amount of procedural generation and variety in TowerClimb is just plain insane! This game really takes some getting used to at first as it actually requires quite a bit of strategy, and that's not normally something most of us think about when it comes to platformers. Learning to use high-jump potions only when necessary, taking the best route, and figuring out the method of avoiding each hazard really seem to be the keys to success with this one. Don't lose your head if the room starts filling with lava! For still being in development, this game sure does have a lot of polish to it.
3rd Place
Flood the Chamber
This is enough to give someone nightmares of being trapped in a room flooding with water, let me tell you. Don't be fooled by this game's cute/charming appearance and presentation, because deep down inside it's a killing machine! Trying to pass through the myriad of tiny obstacles to reach the next save point might seem like a challenge, but if you fall into the rising water, you better be prepared to run through those obstacle courses again. This is one of those frustrating platformers that's actually fun to play, and it's pretty neat that Scoz used the little rogue dude from our contest poster as the main character of the game too!
