Minimal Contest Results
Posted On 11/19/2009 By KniteBlargh
Wow... Just wow... I'd say the Minimal Contest was successful, wouldn't you? Folks, we had a total of 50 entries this time (if you count Jimmy's late entry); that's a new record for Game Jolt, and it just goes to show that everyone else enjoyed this theme as much as we did! The amount of creativity shown within just one week was amazing; though the theme was minimal, the contest certainly wasn't!
With that, let's see some results:
Winners
1st Place
Spectrum Wing
There's something nostalgic about this game that I can't quite put my finger on, but as minimal as the graphic style and goal of the game are, it feels HUGE. With some invisible additions such as distorted sounds, some shaking effects, and physics, the experience becomes real and puts us into this sci-fi world that Davioware created without taking away from the minimal look. The basic goal of the game is simple; you have to destroy all the enemies and collect items in order to move on through the exit. However, that's not as easy as it sounds with the minor puzzle elements, but it's a good challenge, not an impossible one.
2nd Place
Saut
Though silhouette styles have become somewhat common in the indie gaming scene lately, the visual style in Saut actually brings back the good stuff and reminds us why we found silhouettes attractive in the first place. When it comes to minimalistic game graphics, it's hard to go wrong with silhouettes. Graphics aside though, the feature that really shines with this entry is the perfect control scheme; you can't get much simpler than one-button control, and it was implemented so well, Saut became a real joy to play through. Add a high score list and a VIP high score list, and you've got yourself some great replay value.
3rd Place
Fetus
Although this one seems to start out a little slow at first, the atmosphere catches your attention right away and draws you in farther; I had to keep playing. This sounds kind of weird to say, but the lack of music actually really adds to the eerie vibe of Fetus; it's just one of those rare occasions when a game is actually better off without music. The game becomes more challenging as one plays on, as well as more interesting. Besides the minimal graphics, sounds, and controls, this game also grabbed onto the minimal theme in a rather unique way, that being a minimal amount of sense. Playing Fetus is like reading a modern-day novel by Lewis Carroll.
